Three
years ago, my husband and I made the decision to retire in Tairua, or somewhere
on the Coromandel Peninsula. I’ve always loved this area, full of lush native
bush and birdsong, unspoiled beaches – some of which are the best in New
Zealand. Our previous home was at a small settlement in a remote area of
south-east Auckland (where the Rubbish Cat lived), a good forty-minute drive
from civilization. Tairua ticked all the boxes with shops, restaurants, a local
pub, medical centre and, as Gary pointed out, a rest home and cemetery, which
meant we would never need to leave!
We found a house, high on a hill. It looks out
over native bush, the town and the Pacific Ocean. Tairua has around 1,500
residents and this climbs to over 8,000 in the summer – a holiday destination
for overseas tourists and Kiwis alike. Many houses are holiday homes, the town
becoming busy in the summer months and tranquil in winter. Since Covid, we miss
the tourists who used to come in droves from all over the world. We miss the
eclectic mix of language and accents. We even miss Australians! One day, I’m sure,
they’ll be back.
