Just
over a year ago my husband and I bought a 2003 Volkswagen campervan. We named
her Helga von Autobahn, or in English, Helga of the Highway. Once my book, The
Rubbish Bin Cat, was published, I vowed to take it on a road tour of the South
Island, New Zealand for promotion and pen our journey in a series of blogs. My
husband, Gary has his own agenda as an avid photographer, so all the pics
posted are his.
We left our home in Tairua on the 28th February
and after a few false starts – leaving behind our ferry tickets was one – we
were finally off into the unknown. We had loose plans. Make our way to
Wellington via Taupo – a great freedom spot to camp at the Huka Falls
was found – ensconce ourselves in the Top Ten holiday park for four days, visit
Te Papa Museum, Weta Workshop (a must-see for Gary and I was keen to go again)
and visit the Children’s bookshop (a must-see for me). The weather was kind and
not a bit windy. Usually, they don’t call Wellington the Windy City for
nothing!
We hopped on the ferry to Picton and the South
Island and it was from here that our journey would truly begin.
