THE WHERE’S WALLY ROCK

A few days into our trip to the South Island, Gary and I were having some lunch at Lake Tekapo when we glanced down and there was a rock with a painted face leaning against the table. The face was clearly a Where’s Wally one (or Waldo in some countries). I’ve seen painted rocks before, usually placed in strategic positions for a traveller to find, then taken on a wee journey and put somewhere for another lucky person to find. On the back of this rock was written – Waikari Rocks, North Canterbury and a message to post, if found on their Facebook page. We did this and asked if Wally would like to go on holiday. Absolutely came the answer so we promised to post up Wally’s adventures.

Wally went to Milford Sound, and we said goodbye to our friends who were off to the west while we carried on south. He went to Doubtful Sound and visited the smallest bookshop in New Zealand at Manapouri. The lady there loved “The Rubbish Bin Cat” and promised to order it. He met other rocks. He went to Stewart Island and all around the Catlins visiting waterfalls, sea lions sunning themselves in sand dunes and a cave on the beach.

The next stop for Wally, and us, is Balclutha.
